What do capacity and volts mean, and what to look out for?

You will always see capacity and voltage markings on batteries. A "v" indicates the voltage or volts. Capacity is denoted by "mAh", an acronym for milliampere-hour and is commonly used to indicate the maximum energy stored in the cell.

The directory definition of Volts:

"The SI unit of electromotive force, the difference of potential that would carry one ampere of current against one ohm resistance."

In simple layman's terms it tells us how fast the electrons will travel through the circuit, so the higher the voltage the more powerful tool will be. Below is a list of common voltages for power tools.

Which type of battery should I choose, why are there so many different types?

NiCd (nickel-cadmium)

NiCd is one of the oldest technologies and was invented over 100 years ago. They have good performance characteristics at low temperatures, coupled with a good cycle life span (it can be charged many times) and have an exceptional capacity range.

Ni-Mh (nickel-metal hydride)

Ni-Mh batteries were invented in the 1960s' and are still widely used today. The main advantages are the low cost and stability of the cell. Ni-Mh has surpassed the older NiCd technology in both capacity and reliability.

li-ion (Lithium-ion)

li-ion is the most common compound used in today's power tools. With the demands of tradesmen and DIY enthusiasts getting ever greater lithium-ion batteries have quickly become the go-to choice for people looking for a dependable, cost-effective battery that gives constant power and performance at a great price. Lithium-ion has the increased benefit of being lighter than other compounds used. All these extra benefits do come at a cost. Lithium-ion batteries are more expensive than both Ni-Mh and NiCd counterparts.
